Workshop for Educators - "The Ethics of Representation: Holocaust Memory in Film, Music, and Art"糖心vlog
This free day-long workshop for educators examines the ethical challenges of representing the Holocaust through film and music. The film session explores how cinema, particularly science fiction and horror, uses and sometimes misuses Holocaust themes and imagery, raising questions about interpretation, distortion, and the limits of visual storytelling. When approached thoughtfully, these popular genres can illuminate important Holocaust themes, including trauma, guilt, grief, ideological fervor, genocide mentality, and the enduring appeal of Nazism and fascism. The workshop also considers music and artistic production under Nazism, including how cultural expression functioned during the period and how it is remembered and reinterpreted today.
This workshop will be facilitated by Professors Brian Crim and Dana Smith, faculty in the Department of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College.
Learning Outcomes:
- Assess how films, including science fiction and horror, interpret Holocaust themes and the risks of distortion or misuse
- Discuss how film, music, and art can represent trauma, grief, guilt, ideology, and the persistence of fascism.
- Examine the role of artistic and musical expression under Nazism and in shaping Holocaust memory.
Additional Information:
This workshop will take place fully in-person on campus at Keene State. Breakfast, lunch, and workshop materials are provided to participants at no cost. Workshop attendees will receive a certificate of completion listing the number of professional development hours completed.
